SSG Robert Early Clapp

SSG Robert Early Clapp was born 10 Dec 1915 in Smyth County, Virginia to George Sanders and Ada M. (Lawrence) Clapp.  His father worked on a farm and later owned his own farm.  In 1940 Robert was working in a gypsum plant. 

After entering the service and going overseas, Robert was assigned to to G Company 116th Infantry.  He trained with the unit for the D-Day amphibious assault and was promoted to SSG on 25 Jul 1944. On 30 Jul 1944 he was wounded and evacuated to the hospital.  On 7 Aug 1944 he was reassigned to the unit from the replacement depot. SSG Clapp was killed in action on 2 Sep 1944.

SSG Clapp is buried in the Brittany American Cemetery.
