PFC Albert William Schauer

PFC Albert William Schauer was born 31 Mar 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the only son and child of Jacob and Helen (Molnar) Schauer although his mother had a daughter by her first husband, John Nehez. His parents soon divorced and his mother remarried John. Albert is recorded on the 1930 and 1940 census as using the last name of Nehez. His step-father worked as a gardener, however, by 1940 the couple had apparently separated again. Helen worked as a housekeeper and laundress to support her children and in 1940 Albert was working as a dishwasher. His sister had married and she and her husband lived with Albert and his mother. The family reported a total 1939 income of $920. Albert had only been able to complete 2-years of high school.

Albert was drafted in May 1943. At that time he had been working in some local factory. After his basic military training he was sent to England. PFC Schauer was transferred from the replacement depot to B Company 116th Infantry on 13 Jun 1944. He was killed in action in the fighting in the hedgerows on 17 Jun 1944.

PFC Schauer was repatriated in 1949 and re-interred in the Highland Park Cemetery in Highland Hills, Ohio.
