PFC Charles C. Camacho was born 13 Aug 1920 in New York City, New York to Lawrence and Matilda (Fernandes) Camacho. His father drove a truck and later as a laborer for the parks department in the city. Lawrence was born in British Guyana. His mother work for a time as a janitor for an apartment house. On 19 Mar 1940, Charles enlisted in C Company 165th Infantry, New York National Guard. We are not sure when, but he married a woman named Christina (possibly Tuartaro) before leaving the U.S.
In June 1942 his military status changed somehow, perhaps when he was drafted as a former National Guard soldier or when his unit was federalized. Some time later he was assigned to E Company 116th Infantry and was with that unit for the great amphibious invasion of Hitler's "fortress Europe" now popularly known as "D-Day". He was killed in action that day, 6 Jun 1944.
Charles' body was repatriated and he is buried in the Rosemont Memorial Park in Newark, New Jersey.
Note, we cannot find a family relationship between Charles and Arthur Camacho who was killed in action with E Company on 25 Feb 1945.
