PFC Clayton E. Sypal was born 7 Feb 1923 in Kimball, South Dakota. He was the 5th of the 6 children born to Edward Frank and Bertha May (Urban) Sypal. The family moved to Farmington, Minnesota in 1927 and his father supported the family by doing various jobs but particularly working as a carpenter. Clayton attended school there, delivered newspapers (during this time he was given the nickname "Jiggs"), and eventually worked for the railroad and a moving firm.
Clayton was drafted in December 1942 being enlisted as "Clate E. Sypal". He trained first at Camp Toccoa, Georgia where paratroopers were trained. He then went to Camp Croft, South Carolina near Spartanburg and from there he was sent to England in June 1943. Once in England he was assigned to A Company 116th Infantry where he trained for the amphibious assault that was to be part of the invasion/liberation of Nazi occupied France. PFC Sypal was killed in action on 6 Jun 1944 in the landing.
PFC Sypal rests forever in the Normandy American Cemetery.
