PFC Herbert Kaufman

PFC Herbert Kaufman was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Abraham Hayem and Florence (Kelly) Kaufman.  His father was a theater manager and in 1940 was managing the Fountain Theater in Terre Haute, Indiana.  After graduating from high school, Herbert had worked as managing a film exchange.

Herbert was drafted in December 1942. After his training he was sent to England and assigned to E Company 116th Infantry.  As a soldier serving in the regiment he trained for the amphibious assault that was to take place on the Normandy beach code-named "Omaha" on 6 Jun 1944.  He was there for the landing and was wounded in action.  He died of his wound(s) the next day, 7 Jun 1944.

PFC Kaufman is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery.
