PFC John Raymond Byers

PFC John Raymond Byers born 27 Dec 1922 in Baltimore, Maryland to James William "Bill" or "Heavy" Byers and Saidee C. (Martin) Byers .  The youngest of five children, his dad was a professional baseball player (catcher) playing for the Saint Louis Cardinals in 1904, Baltimore in 1905 and later a professional baseball umpire. His mother and oldest brother, James William Byers Jr., died within two weeks of one another in 1932. His father remarried in 1937.

Drafted in March 1943 and sent to England in August or September of that year,  PFC Byers was assigned to C Company 116th Infantry. He participated in the D-Day landing on 6 Jun 1944 and on 7 Jun 1944 he died of wounds suffered the previous day.  He is buried in Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.
