PFC Leo Young

PFC Leo Young was born 22 Apr 1920 in Madison County, Kentucky near Richmond. He was the 6th of the 12 children born to Clifton (known as Jack) and Louisa (McQueen) Young. At the time of his birth his father was farming with his father on a rented farm. The family then farmed another rented farm near Foxtown, Kentucky on Lexington Pike. Leo's father suffered a heart attack and died at the age of 48 in 1933. Louisa then moved with 7 of her children to a place she rented near her eldest son's place near Clay's Ferry. Leo's younger brother, Park, died in 1938 of meningitis. The 4 older children supported the family by working as farm labor earning a reported total of $671 in 1939. Leo worked for Clay Kelley near Lexington, Kentucky.

Leo was drafted in February 1942 and before the year was out had been shipped to England where he was assigned first to the 104th Medical Battalion and then the Medical Detachment of the 116th Infantry. From there he was attached to K Company 116th Infantry to serve as a medic/aidman in that company. He would then have trained for the amphibious assault of which K Company was a part on 6 Jun 1944. Surviving that, PFC Young supported the soldiers in his company until he was wounded himself on 13 Jun 1944. PFC Young died of his wound(s) on 18 Jun 1944.

PFC Young was repatriated in 1949 and after services at the Holiness Church of Clays Ferry was re-interred in Hall Cemetery in Richmond, Kentucky.

Brothers, Vernon Leer Young, Shelby Young and Roy Young, also served during war.
