PVT William D. Barnett was born 17 Jun 1916 in Williamsburg, Pennsylvania to Walter Howard and Margaret E (Querry) Barnett. His father worked in a wood mill and as a painter. In 1940 William was working as a welder and lived with his wife, Eleanor (Olinski) who he married in Youngwood, Pennsylvania on 12 Aug 1939.
William was drafted in October 1943. After training he was sent overseas to England and assigned to B Company 116th Infantry. He was with that unit as they boarded their boats for the amphibious invasion of "fortress Europe" via the shores of Normandy, France. He was killed in action on that day, 6 Jun 1944.
PVT Barnett is buried in the McKeesport and Versailles Cemetery in McKeesport, Pennsylvania.
