SGT Jay Robert Roach

Jay Roach on our left, Hodgins on our right
SGT Jay Robert Roach was born in Martinsville, Virginia on 5 Oct 1914 to James Robert and Minnie May (Roach) Roach.  Of James' and Minnie's 9 children only Jay and Hodgins served in the military.

Jay was a member of H Company 116th Infantry, Virginia Army National Guard before the war and was likely federalized in February 1941 with all the other members of the regiment then serving.  However, there are a couple of interesting things our researcher ran across.  First, he was at some point assigned to I Company 116th Infantry On 15 Jun 1944, Jay was killed in action while serving with F Company 116th Infantry.

Of his immediate family, only older brothers Oscar and Claude (tuberculosis) preceeded him in death.  After the war, Jay's body was returned to the U.S. and he is buried in the Roach Cemetery in Axton, Virginia along with other family members.
