SGT William Newton Dula

SGT William Newton Dula was born 11 Sep 1919 in Augusta County, Virginia to Reverend James Greenlee and Bessie (Graham) Dula.  The family lived on Deerfield and Goshen Road.  His father James was also a forester for the U.S. Government, then worked as a carpenter and by 1940 was farming.  In 1940 William was still living with the family and working as a clerk in a store and in 1939 he reported an income of $300.

William was drafted in April 1941. William married Eleanor Virginia Morris and they had a son in 1942.  Assigned to M Company 116th Infantry, he was with the unit on 6 Jun 1944 and participated in the amphibious assault.  Sometime during that day he was wounded and evacuated to a hospital where he died on 7 Jun 1944.

SGT Dula was returned to the U.S. in 1947 and he is buried in Deerfield Community Cemetery in Deerfield, Virginia.

William had 3 brothers who also served in WW2. James Leon Dula served in the Army Engineers. Robert Elbert Dula served in the U.S. Army. Arthur Marshall Dula, served in the 325th Combat Engineer Battalion as a PFC and he was killed in a automobile accident on 7 Jun 1952. Eleanor never remarried and died in 2006.
