SSG John Holmes

SSG John Holmes was born 24 Apr 1919, most likely in Saint Paul, Minnesota.  We think that his parents were Fred and Sadie (Smolensky) Holmes.  We also think that his father died before 1930 and his mother died before 1940.  He may have had one sister.

John enlisted in September 1940 in the regular army.  It is likely that he was assigned to B Company 116th Infantry before the unit was shipped to England in September 1942.  He trained with that unit in England for the amphibious assault on Omaha Beach and he was assigned to 1st Platoon B Company on 6 Jun 1944 when he was killed in action.

SSG Holmes is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Upper Alton, Illinois.
