1LT William Gardner

1LT William Gardner was born 4 May 1916 in Beverly, Massachusetts to William Joseph and Irene (Williams) Gardner. His father was a barber.

William was a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point beginning in 1936 and graduating in 1941 when he was commissioned a 2LT of infantry on 11 Jun 1941. While stationed at Fort Custer, Michigan he married Eleanor Frances Arrott Dixon. On 5 Sep 1942 he was promoted to 1LT with date of rank being 1 Sep 1942.  William is shown as "on duty" with D Company 116th Infantry on 1 Jun 1944.  He made the landing with that unit and was killed in action on 6 Jun 1944.

1LT William Gardner was repatriated and is buried with many others from the regiment and his wife in Arlington National Cemetery. Eleanor did not re-marry.
