SSG Stuart Leroy Leonard was born 6 Dec 1917 in Clayville, New York the second son of Louis Winfred and Wilhelmina C. Leonard. His father had quite the career starting with farming he worked as a fireman in a cotton mill, as a truck driver, and becoming a civil engineer working in construction. The family moved quite a bit, from Oneida County, New York to Pennsylvania to Maryland and then Miami, Florida.
Stuart entered the service at Fort Meade, Maryland in January 1942. He was probably assigned to M Company 116th Infantry fairly early in his service because he attained the rank of SSG before June 1944. In that time he undoubtedly was with the unit for the training in England from October 1942 to May 1944 as it prepared for the amphibious assault on the French coast. He was with the unit on the day of that operation when he was killed in action on 6 Jun 1944.
SSG Leonard was repatriated in 1948 and is buried in Southern Memorial Park in Miami, Florida.
