PFC Lloyd Herbert Smith Jr. was born in Haskell, New Jersey on 11 Jun 1924. He was the oldest of the 6 children born to Lloyd Herbert and Minnie (Van Tassell) Smith. The family lived in Wanaque township, New Jersey just north of Paterson. His father was a fireman operating a boiler and a blacksmith. The family moved from Ringwood Avenue to 22 Temple Street sometime before 1935. They were paying $13 a month rent in 1940 and lived there for many years. The senior Lloyd earned a reported 1939 income of $1092. The younger Lloyd would soon be employed by Hessler Laundry Company.
Lloyd was drafted in March 1943, trained at Camp Wheeler, Georgia and Camp Shimkin, Pennsylvania. He only had one night overnight at home before departing for England. Assigned to A Company 116th Infantry and PVT Smith trained for amphibious assault that was a planned part of effort to liberate occupied France. PFC Smith was killed in action on 6 Jun 1944.
PFC Smith was repatriated and re-interred in the Midvale Cemetery in Wanaque-Midvale, New Jersey.
