PFC Thompson Gallety Dicks

PFC Thompson Gallety Dicks was born Feb. 9, 1922 in Williston, South Carolina.

South Carolina native whose family later moved to Laramie, Wyoming; member of The Citadel Class of 1944, all of whom were drafted and never graduated. Major Howie was not the first Citadel alumnus to land at OMAHA Beach. That distinction goes to Private First Class Thompson Gallety Dicks, class of 1944, assigned to A Company, 1/116th Infantry Regiment landing in the first wave on the Dog Green sector at H+1. Within ten minutes of landing, the murderous grazing and plunging machinegun and mortar fire rendered the unit combat ineffective. Thompson was killed as he landed with the first wave at Omaha Beach on D-Day, 6 Jun 1944.

PFC Dicks' father was COL John Leon Dicks, QMC, Citadel class of 1918, who served on a military commission in Germany after the war.

PFC Dicks is buried at the Normandy American Cemetery.
