PVT Cecil Fleming Hodges was born 27 Jan 1924 in Mercer County, West Virginia to James Ivan and Lucy (Clisso) Hodges. His father was a coal mine who died in 1933. His mother moved to Giles County, Virginia to be close to family.
Cecil was drafted in February 1943 and left a job in a textile plant. After his training he was sent to England and was assigned to Headquarters 116th Infantry. It was with that unit he was trained for the amphibious assault that was to take place on Omaha beach on 6 Jun 1944. In that assault he was in the second of two LCAs carrying the regimental headquarters when it was struck by artillery fire and everyone aboard killed.
PVT Hodges was repatriated in 1948 and is buried in the Birchlawn Memorial Park in Pearisburg, Virginia.
