PVT Johnnie Singleton was born sometime between the 2nd and 19th of October 1924 in Fusonia, Kentucky which is about 10 miles NNE of the Cumberland Gap. He was the 8th of the 11 children born to John Ivey and Sallie Ann (Campbell) Singleton. His father farmed and worked as a blacksmith to support the family owning their home valued at $200 in 1940 and earning a reported 1939 income of $396.
Johnnie was undoubtedly helping his father farm but reported himself as unemployed when he registered for the draft in 1942. He was still farming when he was drafted in June 1943. After his basic military training he was sent to England and assigned to D Company 116th Infantry and trained with the unit for the planned amphibious assault that was to be part of the effort to liberate France. PVT Singleton was killed in action on 6 Jun 1944 in that attack.
PVT Singleton rests forever in the Normandy American Cemetery.
Brothers also served. Alex J. Singleton rose to the rank of PFC while serving in the U.S. Army 1944-1945. Lloyd Singleton served in the U.S. Army 1940-1945 attaining the rank of CPL and again 1948-1950. Jack Dempsey Singleton, served as a PVT in the U.S. Army in Korea.
