PVT Russell Twist Kernoll Jr

at Oberlin, 1941
PVT Russell Twist Kernoll Jr was born 25 Dec 1922 in Alliance, Ohio the second son of Russell Twist Kernoll.  His mother, name unknown, apparently died before 1930.  His father did not remarry until 1935 and Russell and his brother, Sherrick, were sent to the Lawrence Hall Home for Boys in Chicago, Illinois.  They returned to their father's household after Russell Senior married Florence Cook in 1935. His father worked as a draftsman and engineer. In 1941 Russell was attending Oberlin College.  The family was living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the time.

Russell was drafted in January 1943 and had completed 1 year of college at that time.  After his initial training he was sent to England and assigned to B Company 116th Infantry.  He trained with the unit for the amphibious assault that was to take place on Omaha Beach.  PVT Kernoll was killed in action in that effort on 6 Jun 1944.

PVT Kernoll is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery.  There is a cenotaph for him in the Rochester Cemetery in Rochester, Illinois.  His brother served from 1943 to 1946.
