Samuel was already a PFC in the National Guard Medical Detachment and the Wytheville unit when the Virginia National Guard was federalized in February 1941. He was with the unit as it trained in England and prepared for the D-Day amphibious assault. He was killed in action on 6 Jun 1944 during that action.
SSG Anderson is buried in West End Cemetery in Wytheville, Virginia.
