SSG William Edward Ferrell

SSG William Edward Ferrell was born in King George County, Virginia on 4 Sep 1918. He was the 2nd of William Oswald and Lillian Grace (McDaniel) Ferrell's 5 children. The family farmed on land they owned near Weedonsville, Virginia. Young William worked for his father on that farm.

William was drafted in May 1941.  At that time policy dictated that he be sent to Fort George Meade, Maryland for in-processing and training and it was probably there that he was assigned to B Company 116th Infantry. He would have then trained with the unit at Fort Meade, Fort Bragg, North Carolina and Camp Blanding, Florida before they were sent to England in September 1942.  The unit underwent a long period of intense training only after which some soldiers were permitted passes and leave. This photo shows him as a SGT while he was likely on pass. SGT Ferrell was promoted to SSG sometime before 1 Jun 1944. He was serving in 1st Platoon B Company when he was killed in action on 6 Jun 1944.

SSG Ferrell was repatriated and is buried in the Hanover Baptist Church Cemetery in Edgehill, Virginia.
