SGT Francis Lloyd Sydnor

 

SGT Francis Lloyd Sydnor was born 19 May 1919 in Northumberland County, Virginia. He was the youngest of the 5 children born to Shelton Matthew and Elizabeth Rebecca (Lowery) Sydnor. His father was an oysterman, fisherman and farmer. The family lived in Heathsville, Virginia where his mother died in 1930. The family then moved to Avalon, Virginia after 1935. Francis completed high school and became an electrician going to work for A. J. Lewis & Son in Avalon. 

Francis was drafted in May 1941 and he married Agnes Bland Mills in August of that same year. After his assignment to E Company 116th Infantry he participated in all their training and went to England and prepared for the amphibious assault planned to aid the liberation of France. SGT Sydnor was seriously wounded on D-Day, 6 Jun 1944 and evacuated to a hospital in England where he died of his wound(s) on 7 Jun 1944. 

SGT Sydnor rests forever in the Normandy American Cemetery.
