SSG Edward Andrew Vargo

SSG Edward Andrew Vargo was born 7 Jun 1916 in Prince George's County, Virginia. He was the 5th of 11 children but 3 were older brothers who had died before the age of 5 and Edward was the oldest surviving son of Andrew and Annie (Mazak) Varga. The family spelled the name as "Varga". His father farmed in Prince George County. Both parents had immigrated from Slovakia.

Edward Vargo enlisted in the army at Richmond, VA on 3 May 1941. He was assigned to A Company 116th Infantry at Fort George Meade and trained with the unit there, near Fort Bragg in the Carolina Maneuvers and at Camp Blanding, Florida. He shipped out for England in September 1942 aboard the Queen Mary and the unit arrived there in October. Shortly thereafter, in November 1942, he was admitted to hospital for acute bronchitis and tonsillitis. Returned to the unit, he then trained with them for the planned amphibious landing that was to be a part of the effort to liberate Nazi occupied France. SSG Vargo was  in boat team #6 on D-Day when he was killed in action.

SSG Vargo is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery.

We note that although he was enlisted as "Vargo" the family spelled the name as "Varga".
