SSG James Andrew Wright

SSG James Andrew Wright was born the youngest of 7 children in Campbell County, Virginia on 12 Dec 1915 to James Thomas and Lockie Bell (Drewry) Wright.  His father supported his family of 9 as a machinist.  He married Juanita Mabel Cundiff on 1 Sep 1934. The couple would have a son in 1935 who was premature and died died at birth. They had another son, who survived, in 1936. In the 1940 census James Andrew is shown as being married, having a 5th grade education and working in a shoe factory, likely the Craddock-Terry factory. He had also worked as a driver for the Lynchburg Lumber Manufacturing Company. However, James was separated from his wife as early as 1937 and she is shown on the census as residing with their son and her mother in 1940.

James was a member of the National Guard.  When he was called to active duty, at the time his unit was federalized in February 1941. James and Juanita divorced in March 1942 while James was training with his unit. He was still assigned to B Company 116th Infantry on D-Day and was killed in action on 6 Jun 1944.

SSG Wright's body was returned to the U.S. in 1948.  He now rests forever in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg, Virginia.
