SSG Rufus Bascom Carr

SSG Rufus Bascom Carr was born 23 Oct 1918 in Jewell Ridge, Virginia to Fletcher Fitzpatrick and Lelia Grace (Glover) Carr.  His father worked in a planing mill.

Rufus was drafted in May 1941.  At that time he was apparently working as a lumberman.  On 30 Aug 1941, Rufus married Laura Belle Gibson.  Assigned to D Company 116th Infantry, Rufus trained with the unit for the amphibious invasion of Europe.  He was with that unit when he was killed in action during the D-Day operation on 6 Jun 1944.

SSG Bascom is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery.

Laura did not remarry until 1963.
