TSGT Elvin Tremain Estes was born 14 Sep 1912 in Halifax County, Virginia to Henry Lee and Lena (Wallace) Estes. Henry supported 10 people by farming with assistance from one son who worked as a weaver in a local factory. In 1940, Elvin was also working as a weaver.
Elvin was a PVT in the South Boston National Guard infantry unit when it was federalized in February 1941. A member of F Company 116th Infantry, Elvin rose in rank as the unit prepared for the invasion of "fortress Europe". He was killed in action during the landing on 6 Jun 1944.
He was returned to the U.S. and is now buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Boston, Virginia.
