TSGT Ralph Edgar Jennings was born 14 Oct 1918 in Campbell County, Virginia to James Daniel and Attie Louisa (Brassell) Jennings. His father worked in a local hosiery mill as knitter and foreman. In 1940, Ralph was also working as a knitter.
To add to his income, Ralph joined the Lynchburg National Guard unit and was a PVT in that unit when it was federalized in February 1941. As a member of B Company 116th Infantry, Ralph trained at Fort Meade, Maryland and Camp Blanding, Florida and in September 1942 embarked for England. In England the company participated in the regiment's training for the amphibious assault on Hitler's "fortress Europe". TSGT was killed in action the day of that assault, 6 Jun 1944.
TSGT Jennings was repatriated and is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg, Virginia. Brother, Lawrence Brassell Jennings, served from 1945 to 1946.
