PFC Lester Hawthorne was born in 1920 in Jasper County, Texas to Johnnie Clayburne and Mary Ella (Wilkinson) Hawthorne. The family farmed. In 1940 Lester was at a Civilian Conservation Corps camp.
Lester was working as a pattern maker and was married to Elsie Sue Sheffield when he was drafted in August 1943. By the time he was transferred from the replacement depot to B Company 116th Infantry he had attained the rank of PFC. Lester was wounded on 3 Aug 1944 and evacuated to the hospital. He returned to the unit from the replacement depot on 5 Sep 1944. PFC Hawthorne was killed in action on 18 Nov 1944.

PFC Hawthorne was repatriated and buried in Friendship Cemetery in Roganville, Texas. There is a street named for him, Lester Hawthorne Street, in Kirbyville, Texas. His wife re-married, there were no children by either marriage.
