PVT William Harry Smalling was born 4 May 1912 in Allen County, Kentucky. He was the 2nd of the 6 children of Solomon Price and Lethia Milton (Tinsley) Smalling. His father farmed his own farm valued at $1600 in 1930 along South Fork Road in Barren County, Kentucky and Harry, as his family called him, lived and farmed with his parents. On 3 Mar 1934, Harry married Rossie Lemoin Russell. They moved to Monroe County, Kentucky and rented a home on Mount Hermon Road for $3 a month and farmed to support their daughter who was born in 1938.
Harry was drafted in April 1944. After his basic military training PVT Smalling was sent to the European theater and transferred from the replacement depot to B Company 116th Infantry on 25 Oct 1944 to serve as a rifleman. PVT Smalling was killed in action in the attack on German forces in Setterich, Germany.
PVT Smalling is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery.
Great-grandfather Solomon Smalling served as a PVT in G Company 9th Kentucky Infantry (USA) in the Civil War.
