1LT Robert Bernard Williamson

1LT Robert Bernard Williamson was born 5 Oct 1908 in Martinsville, Virginia to Richard Swanson and Maggie Sue (Prunty) Williamson.  His father was a butcher who died in 1911 (age 42) when Bernard (as he was apparently known in the family) was only 3.  His mother, Maggie, raised her 6 children working as a teacher.  One sister died unexpectedly in 1937.  We have seen one report where his nickname was "Crow", certainly unique!

A member of the Regiment upon federalization, Robert was assigned to H Company 116th Infantry on 6 Jun 1944, D-Day, when he was killed in the landing.

Robert was survived by his mother and 4 siblings and a wife, Isobel (Bowley) who was living in Gateshead, Durham, England and working at Kings College, Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1944 as well as one daughter. He is survived today by two grandsons and three great-grandchildren.

1LT Williamson rests forever in the Normandy American Cemetery and there is a centotaph in Oakwood Cemetery in Martinsville, Virginia.
