PFC Alvin Davis Smith

PFC Alvin Davis Smith was born 21 Aug 1911 in North Bend, Pennsylvania. He was the 2nd of 12 children born to William James and Anna Belle (Jewell) Smith. His father worked in a brickyard and in road construction. Alvin was working for American Aniline Products Company in their Lock Haven, Pennsylvania dye plant in 1940 and earned a reported $400 in 1939.

Alvin was drafted, underwent his basic military training and was sent to England where he was assigned to D Company 116th Infantry. He trained with the unit for the planned amphibious assault and liberation of occupied France. PFC Smith was killed in action on 6 Jun 1944 taking part in that amphibious landing on Omaha Beach.

PVT Smith is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery.

Alvin had 3 brothers who also served. Theodore Harry Smith joined the Navy and was a SeaBee. Gerald Lester Smith served in the U.S. Army at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Louis Benjamin Smith served in the U.S. Army 1943-1945 was re-called and served in Korea. Roy E. Smith served in the Army in Japan.
