2LT Herman G Hilscher, b. 10 Oct 1918 - d. 6 Jun 1944, son of Joseph A and Louise (Ganzert) Hilscher. His father was a veteran of the Spanish American War and his brother Raymond was a Seaman 2nd Class serving in the Navy. We don't often find newspaper articles on our soldiers but of those we do find, this is pretty typical. 2LT Hilscher was serving with F Company 116th on D-Day and he rests at the the Normandy American Cemetery.
SGT Warner Hamlett described 2LT Hilscher's last moments:
As I was going straight towards the beach, I saw Lieutenant Hilscher go down on his knees as a shell exploded. He fell into the hole caused by the explosion. He died there on the beach.…
