CPL Samuel Clinton Palmer was born 28 Nov 1924 in Lee County, Kentucky. He was the 5th of the 7 children born to Robert Lee Jr. and Georgia A. (Hill) Palmer. The family farmed near St. Helens, Kentucky. Samuel was able to graduate from high school and find work as a store clerk.

Samuel was drafted in June 1943. After his basic military training he was sent to England and assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company 2nd Battalion 116th Infantry Regiment. He would not have had much time to train with the unit for the planned amphibious assault that was to be part of the invasion of occupied France. CPL Palmer was with the unit in that assault and killed in action on 6 Jun 1944.

CPL Palmer was repatriated in 1948 and re-interred in Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville, Kentucky. His family also erected an cenotaph in Palmer Cemetery in Tallega, Kentucky.
