PFC Derrill Guy Mellon was born 16 Aug 1921 in Campbell, Minnesota. He was the youngest of the 6 children born to Glenn W. and Miriam Estella (Stout) Mellon. The family farmed. Derrill married Delores Esther Deans in the latter half of 1940. The couple had a daughter in December 1941.
Derrill entered the service sometime after December 1942. After his training he was sent to England and assigned to E Company 116th Infantry where he trained for the amphibious assault that was to be part of the invasion of occupied Europe. PFC Mellon was wounded in the assault on 6 Jun 1944 and died of his wound(s) on 7 Jun 1944.
PFC Mellon rests forever in the Normandy American Cemetery.
