PFC Hershel Lafe Finke

PFC Hershel Lafe Finke was born 13 Jan 1922 in Iowa City, Iowa to Antion Frederick and Myrtle Goldie (Fowler) Finke.  The family farmed.

After he entered the army, Hershel was sent overseas and assigned to F Company 116th Infantry.  He trained with that unit for the amphibious assault on Hitler's "fortress Europe" on the French beach code-name "Omaha".  PFC Finke was killed in action on 6 Jun 1944. 

PFC Finke is buried in the Normandy American Cemetery.  His father had served in the U.S. Army during WWI.
