PVT Bernard William Homerding was born 12 Feb 1922 in Lockport, Illinois to Bernard Anthony and Marie Cecilia (Eipers) Homerding. He was the 2nd of 8 children. His father worked as a foreman at an oil company but in 1940 Bernard's older sister Gladys was apparently supporting the family as a switchboard operator. Bernard might have been helping with his income from work at Sanderson & Porter in Edwards, Illinois.
Bernard entered service in May 1942. Attended basic training at Camp Wolters, Texas and was sent to England where he was assigned to A Company 116th Infantry. He trained with that unit for the amphibious assault that would take place on 6 Jun 1944 and was killed in action on that day while participating in that assault with A Company.
PVT Homerding was repatriated and rests forever with his parents in the Saint Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery in Lemont, Illinois.
Brother, Merwin Steven Homerding, served in the U.S. Navy during the war.
