SSG John Richard Cox

SSG John Richard Cox was born 19 Jun 1913 in Greene County, Virginia the only child of William Abner and Annie Pearl (Thomas) Cox.  William worked on a dairy farm.  In 1940 John was working in a tire retreading shop. 

John was a member of K Company 116th Infantry (Monticello Guard) before the war and was with the unit when it was federalized in February 1941.  He was killed on 6 Jun 1944, D-Day, when the unit participated in the assault on Omaha Beach. 

SSG Cox is buried in Riverview Cemetery in Charlottesville, Virginia as are several other members of the 116th Infantry.
