PVT Herbert O. Sager was born in Newark, New Jersey. We think that he was born in 1919. He was the son of Arthur Wellington and Hilma (Anderson) Sager. His father was born in Lawrenceburg, Indiana and his mother was a native of Sweden. The couple had 5 children and Herbert was the youngest. His father worked as a carpenter as he had in Indiana. Herbert's mother died in 1926. Herbert was working as an office clerk in 1940, the only child still living with his father and reporting a 1939 income of $950. We believe that Herbert married Gloria Rose Nicol in 1940 and the couple moved to Irvington, New Jersey.
Herbert was probably drafted in late 1943 or early 1944. After his basic military training he was sent to the European theater. PVT Sager was transferred from the replacement depot to C Company 116th Infantry on 28 Oct 1944. PVT Sager was wounded in the vicinity of Baesweiler, Germany and died of his wound(s) on 17 Nov 1944.
PVT Sager rests forever in the
Netherlands American Cemetery.
His brother, Chester A. Sager, served in the U.S. Navy during the war.
