PVT Claude Duke Daughtrey

PVT Claude Duke Daughtrey was born 8 Jan 1895 in Nansemond County, Virginia (now the city of Suffolk). He was the 2nd born and only son of the 3 children born to Robert Lee and Margaret Lavinia (Baker) Daugherty. The family farmed in Nansemond county and Claude worked on farm and then began working as a clerk in the town of Suffolk, Virginia.

After entering military service in 1917, Claude was assigned to E Company 116th Infantry. He was sent to France with that unit, departing from Hoboken, New Jersey aboard the USS Finland on 15 Jun 1918. Once in France he trained with the unit before it was sent to a quiet sector and then to participate in the Meuse-Argonne offensive in October 1918. PVT Daughtrey was killed in action on 15 Oct 1918.

PVT Daughtrey was repatriated and re-interred in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia.
