PVT William Henry Bauer was born 8 Feb 1896 in New Orleans, Louisiana to George Michael and Catherine (Kretschner) Bauer.  He was the 2nd of 7 children born to the couple.  Both of his parents were natives of Germany.  William's father worked as a warehouseman in a wholesale grocery.  In 1910, William was also working, as a "cash boy" in a shoe store and by 1917 was working as a printer.

William was likely drafted in 1917.  PVT Bauer was assigned to K Company 116th Infantry and trained with the unit at Camp McClellan, Alabama.  He then shipped out for France with the unit aboard the USS Finland which departed Hoboken, New Jersey in the middle of June 1918. PVT Bauer was killed in action on 15 Oct 1918.

PVT Bauer rests forever in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery.

Older brother, George Philip Bauer, served in C Company 336th MG Battalion.
