PVT Raymond Lee Wheeler

 

PVT Raymond Lee Wheeler was born 9 Oct 1921 in Van Zandt County, Texas. He was the 2nd of the 5 children born to Henry Donald and Lottie Artill (Lane) Wheeler. His father farmed rented land near Mineola, Texas for most of Raymond's life. Raymond quit school after the 8th grade and also went to work as a farmer. He was still farming when he was drafted in March 1944. 

Raymond began his military life at Camp Wolters near Mineral Wells, Texas. After 5-months of training he probably was sent to the European theater in September 1944. PVT Wheeler was transferred from the replacement depot to G Company 116th Infantry on 26 Oct 1944 to serve as a rifleman. He was killed in action on 18 Nov 1944 as the unit took part in the fight to take Setterich, Germany. 

PVT Wheeler is buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery

Great grandfathers, Alford W. Wheeler and Samuel Lane served as PVTs in CSA army during the Civil War and Samuel died of wounds.
