quick note/addendum... Nick's dad may have been born Nicholas Mitchell
as his grandfather was J W (likely James Wesley Mitchell) but for some
reason his father went by Mitchum for most of his life, as borne out by
his children often using that surname. In fact, to this point, Nick is
the only child that we've found who used the surname Mitchell. In any
case, Nick's mom was born in Pittsylvania County which likely was a
reason he enlisted in the Danville unit and thence to C Company 116th
Infantry.

Nick Mitchell, b. 22 Feb 1894 (as Nickodemas Mitchum) - d. 28 Oct 1958.
Son of James Wesley "Nick" and Sarah Elizabeth (Childress) Mitchum in
Rockingham County, NC we know that he had several siblings. A member of
C Company 116th Infantry in WWI, he was wounded. He worked as an
electrician in Raleigh, NC after the war and died at the VA hospital in
Kecoughton, VA. He is buried in the Raleigh National Cemetery in Raleigh, NC.
