PVT Bernard Weinberg

PVT Bernard Weinberg was born in Brooklyn, New York on 4 Jul 1925. He was the youngest of 2 sons born to Alexander Elias and Jean Weinberg. His father was a shoe salesman when the family lived at 3015 Fulton Street in Brooklyn. The family moved to Hopkinson Street and Alexander was working as a WPA teacher and Jean worked in a candy factory. The family then moved to 2140 Dean Street. Bernard was studying at the School of Industrial Arts. His father was working at the New York Navy Yard.

Bernard had only completed 2-years of high school when he was drafted in September 1943. After completing his basic military training, which took about 5-months, PVT Weinberg was sent to the European theater. He probably arrived in England in April or May of 1944. PVT Weinberg was transferred from the replacement depot to C Company 116th Infantry on 10 Jul 1944 and he was killed in action by artillery fire near Saint-Lo on 13 Jul 1944.

We do not know where PVT Weinberg is buried. It is likely that he was repatriated as he is not in one of the overseas cemeteries nor is he in one of the national cemeteries in the United States.

Bernard's father served as a SGT in Headquarters Company 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division in France during WWI and he is buried in the Long Island National Cemetery in East Farmingdale, New York.

The Brooklyn post, Post 468, of The Jewish War Veterans was renamed for PVT Bernard Weinberg in 1947.
