PVT Emery I. Harris was born in 1917 in Green County, Ohio the youngest and 7th child of Samuel J. and Mary A. (Clutter) Harris. His father farmed in Green County. Emery was working for the Works Progress Administration as a laborer in 1940, reporting a 1939 income of only $70.
Emery was drafted in April 1942 and trained first at Camp Perry, Ohio before being transferred to Camp Gruber near Muskogee, Oklahoma. It was there that he met and married Louise Jones on 31 Jul 1943. PVT Harris was sent to the European theater in June 1944. He was transferred from the replacement depot to E Company 116th Infantry on 9 Aug 1944 but wasn't with that unit for very long. He was transferred to G Company 116th Infantry on 13 Aug 1944. PVT Harris was wounded on 1 Sep 1944 in the battle for the liberation of Brest, France and died of his wound(s) on that same day.
PVT Harris is buried in the Brittany American Cemetery.
