PVT Robert E. Kain was born 31 Dec 1923 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest of 3 sons born to Ethan Charles and Margaret Rosalie (Abt) Cain. Robert was apparently the only one of his family to use this spelling of his name. Ethan worked as a boiler maker, street car conductor, telephone switchboard operator to support his family.
Robert was drafted in March 1943. PVT Kain shipped for Europe in May 1944 just a couple of months after his mother died of pancreatic cancer. On 5 Jul 1944 he was transferred from the replacement depot to C Company 116th Infantry. PVT Kain was killed in action on 6 Jul 1944.
PVT Kain was repatriated in 1949 and buried in Holy Name Cemetery in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
Both of his brothers also served in the war. His oldest brother, James Russell Cain, entered the Army late in 1944 and was discharged a year later. His other brother, Charles Edward Cain, was a PVT in the US Army Air Force and was killed in a motor vehicle accident in Germany in October 1944.
