William was drafted in April 1941. It is likely that after his basic training he was assigned to K Company 116th Infantry and participated in training with the unit before it shipped out for France in September 1942. The unit trained in England for the amphibious assault on occupied France which took place on 6 Jun 1944. SGT Marlin was with the unit for the landing and fought with the unit to Saint Lo. SGT Marlin was killed in action on 17 Jul 1944.
SGT Marlin was repatriated and re-interred in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
