PFC Owen Hulon Short

PFC Owen Hulon Short was born 5 Aug 1920 to Owen Franklin and Almeda May (O'Banion) Short in Hart County, Kentucky.  Medie (as she was known) was the senior Owen's second wife (30 years younger than her husband) and she died in 1923. Hulon's father died in 1939. Hulon had 8 half-siblings and 2 siblings, the last of his father's children.  After his mother's death his brother Clay was  sent to live with other relatives but their older half-sister Ada came to care for Owen and his youngest children.  Half-sister and de-facto step-mother Ada Lee Short died in 1941 at age 45.

In this photo Hulon is shown wearing an armor division shoulder insignia.  He was not assigned to C Company 116th Infantry until 10 Jul 1944 so he may have been assigned as an infantryman in an armored unit, wounded and reassigned when returned from hospital.  This was not unusual.  PFC Owen Hulon Short was killed in action on 6 Aug 1944 near Vire, France.  He is buried in the Brittany American Cemetery.
