PVT Donald Winslow Schenck

PVT Donald Winslow Schenck was born 12 Aug 1911 in Beech Creek, Pennsylvania. He was the only child of Foster Bell and Laura M. (Winslow) Schenck. His father worked in a brick works and earned enough to purchase a home in Liberty, Pennsylvania which was valued at $2000 in 1930. Don, as he was known, married Gladys S. Williams and moved to State College, Pennsylvania where he became manager of an A&P store.

Don was drafted in December 1943. After his basic military training he was sent to the European theater leaving home on 2 Jul 1944. 10-days after his departure Gladys gave birth to their son. PVT Schenck was transferred from the replacement depot to C Company 116th Infantry. PVT Schenck was killed in action on 25 Aug 1944 as the unit took part in the attack to liberate Brest, France.

PVT Schenck was repatriated and re-interred in the Schencks Cemetery in Howard, Pennsylvania.
