PVT Robert Francis Thilges was born 31 Jul 1925 in Currie, Minnesota. He was the youngest of the 7 children born to Hieronymus Herbert "Roney" and Margaret Mary (Illg) Thilges. His father farmed to support his family and rented a farm near Murray, Minnesota before renting a farm near Tracy, Minnesota. Robert was working for Mrs. J. D. Tracy's produce company in Tracy, Minnesota in 1943.
Robert was drafted in September 1943. After completing his basic military training he was sent to the European theater. PVT Thilges was transferred from the replacement depot to B Company 116th Infantry on 14 Jul 1944 when the regiment was involved in the bitter fight for Saint-Lo, France. He was killed in action that same day.
PVT Thilges was repatriated in 1948 and re-interred in Saint Mary's Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Tracy, Minnesota.
